Flower's three week old pups Parsley, Basil, Rose and Columbus, emerge from the burrow for the first time. At their age they're expected to stay at the den for at least another week, however when the Whiskers leave to forage little Columbus follows them. While Parsley, Basil and Rose are looked after by Mozart and other babysitters, Columbus is looked after by the rest of the group. While out foraging he witnesses Flower assert her authority over a thief, Pookie. Columbus then steals Flower's food for himself, but she manages to get it back without trouble. Columbus quickly tires himself out, but Shakespeare is on hand to carry the pup around. In the late afternoon the family make it home safely.
The next day Columbus remains at home with his siblings. They are babysat by Youssarian, who has history of being an unreliable canididate for the job. Meanwhile the Whiskers venture into Lazuli territory to seek out pups they had attempted, and failed, to kill previously. They find that the burrow had been abandoned by the Lazuli and no pups were to be found, thus the Whiskers return to their own territory. Back home the group discover an owl pellet, it causes alarm among the members. However the predator is no where to be seen. The Whiskers move on and eventually come across an old oil can, which the teenagers use for a playground. They continue on and finally find the culprit behind the pellet: an eagle owl is spotted snoozing in a tree. But the gang manage to race passed before the owl notices them. Back at the burrow the family find the pups alive and well. Youssarian is finally relieved of his duties and goes to bed early.
